Talk show icon Trisha Goddard was among those reacting to the post, and she typed in reply: "You used to be a dinner lady???" While comedian Luke Hamnett typed: "You look like First Lady Barbara bush." Without missing a beat, Alan responded: "The closest I’ve come to a bush."

Another follower typed: "Ha, love the hair. I thought it was your mum." However, others were stunned by Alan's throwback snap. One enamoured follower wrote: "I think you look Awesome" alongside a string of flame emojis. And another wrote: "The original ... now I see his inspiration."

Alan's youth has been the inspiration for hit show Changing Ends and follows a young version of himself growing up in Northampton during the 1980s. The star recently opened up to Radio Times to share his hope that the show will continue to be renewed - while also acknowledging there would be a clear end point for the series.

He said: "I think I would like to do some more, but I feel its home is in the '80s. So maybe, I don't know, '89 or something. And then, when I finally got to the stage where I went, 'Oh, do you know what? I am gay, I'm different, I don't care what people think' – that's when the spell was broken.

"So, I think I love this innocence. I love the 'What's going on?!'. I love all that, but there's going to come a time... I think as soon as I understand and acknowledge what I am, then I think the spell is broken and that's when it should end." The first season of the show began airing in June 2023 while a second season aired earlier this year.
