Apple issues 'important' advice to all iPhone users today - check your settings now

Anyone with an iPhone in their pocket would be wise to head to the Settings menu and download the latest iOS update as soon as possible. Apple has just released an for its popular smartphones and is urging all users to download and install it immediately.

"iOS 18.1.1. This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users," the US giant confirmed.

So why is this patch so serious and why do you need to take urgent action?

The update fixes two bugs that could allow attackers to remotely compromise a user’s device. That basically means a cyber crook could access things without needing physical access to your Apple gadgets. If that wasn't worrying enough, one of the reasons this update has been rushed out so quickly is that hackers are thought to already be using the flaw to attack certain devices in the wild - that's something called a zero-day attack.

Currently, those hacks have only taken place via Mac devices running Intel processors but Apple clearly wants to keep all of its products safe which is why the bug has also been fixed on iPhones and iPads as well.

"Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems," the US technology giant added.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR iPHONE

To make sure you are running iOS 18.1.1 simply head to the Settings > General > Software Update. Here you should see the option to download and install iOS 18.1.1.

The file is around 500MB in size so make sure you have enough data if downloading away from Wi-Fi. Your may also need to restart after the installation so don't hit the download button if you are waiting for an important call or text.

Speaking about the update, Michael Covington, VP of Strategy at security firm Jamf, said: “Apple’s iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1 include two important security fixes to bugs that could allow attackers to remotely compromise a user’s device. While Apple has warned that the vulnerabilities, also present in macOS, may be actively exploited on Intel-based systems, we recommend updating any device that is at risk.

"The fixes provided by Apple introduce stronger checks to detect and prevent malicious activity, as well as improve how devices manage and track data during web browsing. With attackers potentially exploiting both vulnerabilities, it is critical that users and mobile-first organisations apply the latest patches as soon as they are able.”
