Sally Nugent, the host of BBC Breakfast, opened up about her struggles with sleep during Wednesday's programme.

During the latest instalment, Sally, 53, and co-host were talking about the latest headlines, where chat got onto sleep due to a new study reported in today's (9 October) newspapers.

The study, published in the journal Plos Biology, was carried out by researchers from Aalto University and the University of Oulu, both in Finland, where it is claimed that a poor night's sleep could influence your brain for up to two weeks.

Jon, 54, said: "One subject we're all obsessed with here, the entire team, is sleep. It's the first thing we talk about every morning, how did you sleep last night? You had a bad night's sleep?"

To which Sally chimed in with a personal revelation: "Oh, Sunday night Jon, I did the programme Monday morning on an hour's sleep didn't I?" to which Jon quipped back: "An hour? You lucky thing!", reports .

Sally elaborated: "I know, it was really not good! It was just one of those nights where you can't sleep." When queried if she's now well-rested, Sally confirmed: "Definitely!"

However, Jon was quick to cast doubt based on the new sleep study findings, interjecting with: "Well, maybe you haven't!" as he explained that the findings found that a bad night's sleep can take up to two weeks to catch up on again.

Sally then added another detail from the report saying it can really affect your mood also as she quipped: "Have I been grumpy?" to which Jon replied: "No, you haven't actually or maybe you're just consistently in a bad mood, I don't notice the difference!" with the duo laughing.

It comes as Jon was quick to call out the "dull" autumn weather earlier this week as Sally questioned just how bad things will be. The famous duo were back on the red sofa on Monday morning covering the latest news headlines. But when discussing the weather Sally and Jon were not hopeful that the report would be positive.

Considering the colder temperatures, Jon turned to his co-host concerningly and said: "It's just after quarter to seven, we're talking about how the weather is given us a bit of a dull autumn."

Sally responded while involving weather forecaster Matt Taylor: "What autumn leaves not looking quite so pretty than they should, we're gonna talk about that in just a few minutes after we've seen Matt who's going to tell us just how bad it's going to be. How bad is Matt?"

BBC Breakfast continues on weekdays at 6am on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
