Boxing fans took to social media to show concern for Evander Holyfield during Mike Tyson's fight with .
The former cruiserweight and heavyweight champion was in the studio at the AT&T Stadium in Texas alongside host Kate Scott and former ring legend Lennox Lewis. But Holyfield appeared ill at ease, seemingly not hearing Scott's questions and asking Lewis to repeat them.
Holyfield's behaviour did not go unnoticed with one fan saying: "Holyfield not being able to hear during the interviews and nobody making a joke about his ear being bitten off is a massive fumble for ." Another said: "Evander Holyfield don’t have a clue what’s going on" while yet another added: "This Evander Holyfield segment is absolutely wild."
It seemed Holyfield's earpiece wasn't working but fans were less than forgiving. "Evander Holyfield just made more money staring off into the distance for five minutes than I have in my entire adult life," said another. Another said: "I actually liked Lennox, he took some liberty with the question which made it funny. Also seemed like Holyfield wasn’t firing on all cylinders."
Host Scott later apoligised, saying: "Evander, I apologise. I'm so sorry about the sound. Lennox, thank you for helping us out with the interview. We appreciate you. Good to see you tonight. Good to see both of you champions with us tonight." Holyfield and Lewis both fought Tyson with the former having his ear bitten off in their second fight. Lewis also defeated Tyson who was coming to the end of his career when he took on the Brit.
Tyson was returning to the ring at the age of 58 to face YouTuber Paul having not fought since he drew with fellow legend Roy Jones Jr four years ago. His last professional fight came almost 20 years ago when Tyson retired on his stool after five rounds against Kevin McBride.
Paul had amassed a 10-1 career in the ring since turning professional with a knockout of fellow social media star AnEsonGib in 2020. Since then he had mainly fought former MMA fighters including Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz. Paul and Tyson had been due to clash in July but the veteran postponed the bout after suffering an inflamed ulcer on a flight. Tyson collapsed in the bathroom before coughing up blood and being taken to hospital.
