Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi makes Everton feelings clear after 'missed opportunity'

Send Push

Marc Guehi claims Crystal Palace must learn the harsh lessons from their loss at Everton and get their first Premier League win.

Palace are still searching for their first three points and Guehi was gutted to lose after he put them ahead and they were in control at half-time. Next up on Saturday lunchtime are Arne Slot ’s Premier League leaders Liverpool and Eagles skipper Guehi says they must do better.

“It was a massive opportunity missed,” said the England centre-half. “We should have done better and we just have to go again now.

“There’s only one feeling - disappointment. We let ourselves down. We need to have a better mentality as a group, we need to be stronger and to start winning games, simple.

“It’s back to training, back to basics and then when the next game comes around, we have to be ready for that.”

Adam Wharton agreed that Palace must improve and the England midfielder said: “During the game you’ve got to keep trying to create chances and hope we get another goal, but we didn’t do that.

“We need to go back to training and work harder because we’re not getting the results. The performances aren’t good enough.”

Palace boss Oliver Glasner rued the period after the restart when they were caught cold.

“I think we controlled most of the first half and then had a bad 15 minutes straight after the kick-off where we lost the game,” he said. “Many parts of the game we didn’t look like we’d lose it, that makes it more disappointing.

“At the end of the first half the crowd was booing and not pleased with the home team and we gave them the momentum with the easy goal from a long ball from (Jordan) Pickford and giving them a stupid foul.

“They got their belief and the second goal was also a second-phase situation and we were not ready. We tried everything but we got nervous and could not find the right spaces.

“We are not pleased with the start (to the season). Now we need to stick together and to deal with the situation.”
