David de Gea's penalty heroics are the toast of Florence - but AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca was left fuming after his side's double denial.

The Serie A side slumped to a 2-1 defeat to De Gea’s new side Fiorentina at the weekend. Yacine Adli had given Fiorentina the lead, only for ex- winger to equalise on the hour mark.

"Our designated penalty taker is Pulisic," he confirmed after the game. Fonseca added: "I don't know why the players changed their minds. I have spoken to them and told them that this can't happen again. When we miss two penalties and concede a goal like the last one, it becomes difficult to win despite creating a lot."

Fonseca was also left irritated at the refereeing during the game. It wasn’t just his side that was awarded a penalty - with Fiorentina also given a chance that ex-Everton star Moise Kean failed to take advantage of.

"I don't like talking about refereeing, but this isn't football," Fonseca said. “ is made up of contact, and one touch cannot be enough to give a penalty. This is football not the circus. And I'm not just talking about the penalty against us but also the ones we got."

Should United have kept David de Gea?

Away from Fonseca’s complaints, De Gea also spoke out after the game following his two penalty saves. Taking to , the Spanish goalkeeper wrote: “Started in Spain, made in Manchester, loving it in Italy.”

De Gea’s former United teammatealso shared his thoughts. He jokingly replied: "But you were 'finished'... oh wait.”

De Gea now has a fortnight off due to the current international break. Fiorentina resume their season in just under two weeks’ time against Lecce ahead of a Europa Conference League clash with St Gallen.

De Gea signed for Fiorentina for nothing in the summer, a year after leaving Old Trafford at the end of his contract. He has so far made six appearances for the side and claimed a solitary clean sheet. De Gea is under contract until the summer.
