Doritos makes huge change to popular flavours - and shoppers can try them this week

Send Push

has made a huge change to Doritos, and Brits will see the new change from this week.

The global and drinks brand has reformulated its Doritos recipe to make them HFSS-compliant. HFSS stands for "r," and the classification is used in the Department for Health's Nutrient Profiling (NP) model. The HFSS classification restricts the promotion and placement of products within retailers in the UK.

Due to this, brands have been working to reduce the level of salt, fat, and sugar in their products. Alongside cutting their salt and fat levels, PepsiCo says its new recipe makes its Doritos "crunchier and more substantial" and “a better base to load with salsas and dips.”

The food giant says it has added more corn to the recipe and "fine-tuned" the cooking process. Because of this, the new Doritos have 24% less salt and 15% less fat than the previous recipe. The new recipe is already used in packs of Doritos Dippers and Doritos Extra Flamin’ Hot but has now been expanded to the core Doritos range - Cool Original, Tangy Cheese, and Chilli Heatwave. The reformulated packs began rolling into UK at the beginning of this week.

PepsiCo says the new recipe is the result of “years of meticulous research, development and testing” by PepsiCo’s teams in Leicester and Coventry. The company recently invested £13million in its Coventry site, which has been the home of Doritos since the brand first launched in the UK 30 years ago. PepsiCo said its investment helped replace its manufacturing line and allowed changes to be made to the corn washing, milling, cutting and cooking processes. The new machinery also helps reduce the Coventry site’s environmental impact by cutting 700 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually

The new recipe sees the calorie level of a 30g portion of Doritos drop across all three flavours with Cool Original going from 151 calories to 144kcal. Chilli Heatware has dropped from 150 kcal to 143 per 30 grams and Tangy Cheese has gone from 151kcal to 144kcal. The amount of fat across all three flavours has dropped to 6.6 grams - from the 7.8 and 7.6 levels before.

Robert Lowery, PepsiCo UK senior director for R&D said: "Our teams have spent years mastering the art of cooking up delicious tortilla chips and this recipe is the culmination of all their hard work to perfect the trademark Doritos crunch. We can’t wait for these Doritos to land on shelves across the UK, bringing fans bold flavour and even more crunch in every chip."

The move contributes to Walkers’ ambition - which is also owned by PepsiCo - to make snacks that are non-HFSS or sold in portions of under 100 calories - which comprise 50% of its sales - by 2025.
