England UEFA coefficient ranking after Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and Villa Champions League wins

Send Push

It is early days, but it will not be too long before people are having water cooler or pub discussions over the UEFA coefficient points system.

Last season, Italy and Germany picked up a fifth Champions League spot for their clubs, due to the expanded format of Europes top competition. Atalanta got to and won the Europa League, with Fiorentina also reaching the final of the Conference League. Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, got to the final of the Champions League, as did Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.

Who will get the extra spots this time around though? The two extra places are based on UEFA's coefficient rankings, with clubs earning points for their associaiton based on their performance in European competition.

All four of England's representatives in this year's Champions League were winners on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Arsenal beat PSG, Man City saw off Slovan Bratislava, Liverpool won against Bologna and Aston Villa picked up a huge victory over Bayern Munich.

football.london takes a look at the current situation and how the points are awarded...

The points system

Each club gets certain ranking points for wins, draws and progression in the European competitions, which add up to give associations ranking points overall. And the two associations with the highest average points come the end of the campaign win the extra spots for their leagues.

1 – All wins in qualifying and play-off matches(Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

1 – All draws from group stage (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

0.5 – All draws in qualifying and play-off matches (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League)

4 – Champions League group stage bonus participation

4 – Champions League Round of 16 bonus participation

4 – Europa League group winners

2 – Europa League group runners-up

2 – Conference League group winners

1 – Conference League group runners-up

1 – Each round clubs reach from the round of 16 (Champions League, Europa League)

1 – Each round clubs reach from the semi-finals (Conference League)

How the association points are worked out

The total number of points is then divided by the number of teams competing in European competition that season. With seven teams in Europe this season, compared to Italy's eight and Germany's eight, the Premier League could be in a good position come the end of the season

Where do England stand?

The wins for all four clubs in the Champions League this week leave England with a total of 18 points so far in European competition. That is the third-best haul of any country so far.

That number is then divided by seven - the number of teams from the Premier League in Europe this season - to give England an average of 2.571 points.

That number leaves them 19th on the list of associations so far, so some way off the top two required to earn a fifth Champions League place. Czechia are currently top with a 5.300 average.

However, only two countries above England in the rankings currently have all their teams still in European competition - Portugal and Belgium (and they only have five representatives compared to England's seven) - meaning England have many more opportunities to pick up points than the rest as the season goes on.
