Erik ten Hag reveals Man Utd 'worries' as he responds to Bruno Fernandes struggles

Send Push

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has admitted he is "worried" about the team's ability to create chances ahead of their clash against Tottenham - but insists he has full confidence in Bruno Fernandes to have a top season.

The Red Devils are preparing for a huge home game against Spurs on Sunday hoping to get back to winning ways after back-to-back draws against Crystal Palace and FC Twente.

United have suffered from inconsistent form this season - firing a blank against Palace and being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Twente - having put seven past Barnsley earlier this month.

The team have ranked low down in the table of teams who have created the most opportunities in the Premier League this season - with United only making 60 "big chances" so far, putting them 13th out of the 20 teams.

Now Ten Hag wants to see his United players become more creative and ruthless in front of goal as they prepare to face a Spurs side who push high up the pitch under Ange Postecoglou and leave spaces in behind.

"We have to kill [games]," the Dutchman told Sky Sports. "We are creating lots of chances but we don't finish enough. I'm worried when we don't create chances. I know we have players who can finish. We have plenty of good finishers."

United's primary creative outline is captain Bruno Fernandes, who is having a quiet season by his standards after failing to score in the Premier League and only registering one assist - though Ten Hag is not worried about his performances and believes he will have a great campaign.

He added: "Every season it's the same [debate about Bruno Fernandes] mand at the end of the season Bruno created the most chances in the Premier League and scores a lot of goals. I'm not worried.

Another player who will have the opportunity to show his quality up front is Marcus Rashford - who netted his first goal since March in a 3-0 win over Southampton earlier this month before a brace against Barnsley, before being benched against Palace.

Ten Hag, who opted to start Rashford against Spurs, said it was up to the England international to keep pushing for more starts now, saying: "Last week he [Marcus Rashford] scored three goals so he's in a good direction. Now he has to make the last step."

United are 11th in the table ahead of their clash against Spurs - with two wins, one draw and two defeats, giving them seven points.
