If you're looking for a perfect autumn or winter getaway that's just a two-hour flight from the UK, Vienna in Austria could be your ideal destination.

This European city caters to all types of travellers, whether you're after a relaxing city break or keen to explore cultural and historical sites on foot.

According to Insider Monkey, Vienna is one of the most walkable cities globally, so you might not need to factor in public transport costs during your stay.

The city boasts several highlights, including Schonbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Hapsburg rulers, the Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral, and the Hofburg, the Hamsburg's main imperial palace, now home to the Spanish Riding School.

TripAdvisor's 'Must-do experiences in Vienna' also recommend attending a classical music concert at St Stephen's, embarking on a historical walking tour of the city centre, and enjoying a half-day wine tour just outside the city, reports the Express.

Austria's tourist board provides some insight into Vienna's rich history: "Vienna's history dates back to the first post-Christian century, when the Romans established the military camp Vindobona."

The cityscape today is dominated by Baroque buildings, mostly created under the rule of Empress Maria Theresia (1740 - 1780) and Franz Joseph (1848 - 1916), who significantly contributed to the monumental architecture in the city's centre.

If you're planning a trip to Vienna this November, don't miss the chance to experience the city's famed ball season. According to the tourist board, "no other country has balls as romantic and festive as Vienna."

From November through February, Vienna comes alive with over 400 balls, steeped in courtly traditions that hark back to the 18th century.
