It's been nearly two decades since the deadliest tsunami in recent history. The catastrophic event occurred on 26 December 2004, claiming the lives of 230,000 people when an earthquake triggered a tidal wave that reached speeds of up to 500 mph.
A two-part documentary, Tsunami 2004: The Day the Wave Hit, airing at 9pm on Sunday, 17 November, delves into the events in Thailand and Sri Lanka. Among those who tragically perished were notable figures including 's daughter, British Arts administrator Jane Attenborough.

Jane, her mother-in-law Audrey Holland, and Attenborough's 15 year old granddaughter Lucy were all killed while holidaying in Thailand. Jane was just 49 years old when she tragically passed away, ten years before the death of her father.
Argentinian photographer Fernando Bengoechea also tragically lost his life during the disaster. The partner of Nate Berkus was reported missing and never found while the couple were holidaying in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka.
They were swept out of their beachfront hut by the force of the wave and despite managing to stay together initially, they were eventually separated.
Simon Atlee, the photographer and boyfriend of Petra Němcová, tragically drowned in the tsunami 20 years ago. His girlfriend, a 25 year old Victoria's Secret model, miraculously survived by clinging onto a tree for eight hours.
She was left with a broken pelvis and severe internal injuries, but was rescued by Thai locals and airlifted to a nearby hospital. Simon's body was discovered almost three months later, in March 2005.
Among the victims was also 21 year old Thai Prince Khun Poom Jensen, grandson of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand and nephew of the current King Vajiralongkorn. Tragically, Jensen drowned while holidaying at the La Flora Resort hotel in Khao Lak.
His body was identified the following day. Swedish reality TV star Kristina Fröjmark, known for her appearance on Farmen-Skärgården, also sadly lost her life. Kristina, along with her husband Björn and their two children, drowned on 26 December 2004 during the tsunami.
Among the notable personalities who tragically lost their lives in the disaster were British journalist Robert Whymant, 60, Australian League player Troy Broadbridge, 24, Swedish musician Mieszko Talarczyk, 30, Norwegian composer Sigurd Køhn, 45, British policy researcher Stephen Lissenburgh, 40, Sri Lankan cricketer Sujeewa Kamalasuriya, 39, and again, Swedish musician Mieszko Talarczyk, 30.
