Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel in talks with England over manager vacancy

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is in talks with the Football Association over the permanent England job.

, 51, led the to Champions League glory in 2021 but was sacked the following year. He is currently without a club, having left Bayern Munich at the end of last season. The German left Bayern after they missed out on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen.

Tuchel has been among the bookmakers’ favourites for the England job since Gareth Southgate stood down after Euro 2024. Now, according to , the FA have been in talks with Tuchel's representatives about taking over from Southgate permanently.

The report states that the FA have accelerated their search for a successor to Southgate in recent days, after the Nations League defeat to Greece and interim manager Lee Carsley's confused messaging over his future. The FA declined to comment on the reports.

Speaking after England's 2-1 win over Finland on Sunday, Carsley said the role deserves a world-class coach that has won trophies. Asked if whoever eventually gets the England job has to be English, the interim boss said: “No, definitely not. I think it’s important that the best candidate gets the job.

“We’ve seen in the past that we’ve had different nationalities coach the team. The best candidate should get the job.

“I think we’d be putting ourselves in a corner if we didn’t, and we didn’t open our minds a bit. I think it’s important that any job that’s available, you know, everyone that’s at that level should apply for it.”
