Frank Lampard reveals the one job he 'couldn't turn down' as ex-Chelsea boss plots return

Send Push

Frank Lampard admits he would be "crazy" to turn down an opportunity to manage England in the future.

The former Everton and Chelsea boss is currently out of work after returning to Stamford Bridge on an interim basis briefly during the 2022/23 season. He had previously been sacked by the Toffees after a year at the helm.

Lampard, 46, has been linked with roles in the England set-up over the past 12 months, including the Under-21 job and then, more recently, with the senior vacancy.

Having won over 100 caps for his country during his illustrious playing career, Lampard knows the pressures that come with representing England all too well - but it wouldn't put him off if he were to ever be offered a crack at the top job.

Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast, he said: “As an English player who played 100-plus times, and an English person who's very proud – of course, the England set up is something... I never dreamed of playing as many times for England, let alone now as a coach.

“So, now as a coach, I think I would be crazy to sort of say, ‘Oh no, that would never interest me'. It would have to be something that they would want me to do, and have to be something that I want to do and thought I could add value to it in any way.”

Intriguingly, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker named Lampard as a potential successor to Gareth Southgate before the former Three Lions chief stood down from his role back in July.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast in the summer, Lineker said: “I think he's [Lampard] been a bit unlucky in his managerial career in some ways.

“He gets it tactically and he's Frank Lampard. I think this is Gareth Southgate's last tournament whatever, whether we win it or not. But I wouldn't disregard Frank. I think players would respect him immensely.”

Despite his absence from the game, Lampard confirmed earlier this year that he was ready to return to the dugout after rejecting a number of opportunities that had been floated to him since his second spell with the Blues.

“Some opportunities have come my way, they didn't feel right for the time. So I've kind of taken that decision a bit at times,” he told talkSPORT.

“But now I feel ready so we will see what opportunities come up. I'm certainly ready to work. I love doing what I do, so we will see.”
