Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid interrupted Wednesday's show to bring some breaking news to ITV viewers.

Susanna said: "So, our breaking news this morning is the rate of inflation went up to 2.3 percent last month according to official figures released in the last few minutes.

"It's being seen as a significant rise after inflation fell to a three-year low of 1.7% the month before. Higher gas and electricity prices are being blamed."

Her co-star Richard Madeley added to the conversation, saying this news comes following recent figures suggesting 100,000 pensioners in England and Wales could be forced into relative poverty by the end of the decade over cuts to the winter fuel allowance.

The show then cut to correspondent Nitya Rajan, who was live from a community kitchen in Wallsend to speak about the cost-of-living crisis.

Serving around 221 meals a week, Nitya highlighted that it's primarily pensioners who attend.

Speaking to one of the cooks who was prepping meals for the day, he discussed the latest inflation figures and how they will impact the people he sees on a daily basis.

He said: "Pensioners are already struggling with the cost of living crisis. More rises, how much more can people take? It's getting to that point where people are struggling so much."

During the broadcast, ITV also spoke to local residents in the town, who highlighted the level of struggle they were going through.

One woman confessed she wears multiple cardigans and jumpers while inside as she doesn't like to be cold, while another man slammed the government as a "joke".

He said: "The government can sit behind their desks and expect us to be out here grafting every day trying to live our lives and struggling to live it, even though we work six, seven, five days a week."

Susanna added: "We know that the energy price cap is likely to be going up on Friday. Which means that your are likely to go up from January 1 next year."

Richard replied: "It's extraordinary, isn't it? The figures we were just referring to at the top of this hour. It comes from the government, its official government figures saying that 100,000 pensioners are going to be falling into poverty under their watch, incredible."

People watching the show quickly took to to share their thoughts on the breaking news announcement.

One person said: "As surely expected and will go up even further next month! With this and further cold spells, check on elderly neighbors and make sure they’re warm and safe."

Another feared: "And it will get worse…."

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
