United did manage to rescue a point with 10 men thanks to Maguire’s 91st-minute header from Christian Eriksen’s outswinging corner. But the point was still a disappointment given their fast start and the fact they are now four games without a win this season.

Ten Hag made broadcaster TNT Sports wait for their post-match interviews, keeping his players inside the dressing room at the Estadio do Dragao for a prolonged period. Eventually, it was former captain .

Asked about the delay, he told TNT Sports: "After every game you analyse, you speak amongst yourselves, the manager spoke, few members of staff spoke and the players spoke as well. It's pretty normal, I've been in many dressing rooms after the game where everyone has a chat and speaks about what we can do better."

Ten Hag has now managed to scrape together just three wins in 10 matches across all competitions this season. But Maguire brushed off any talk of the Dutchman losing his job. "I've played for this club for six years so I know how it works," he said.

"When you go through a bad spell players come under pressure but also the manager does. He's experienced enough, he's been in the game long enough and at this club long enough that he's learnt how to deal with it. It's part and parcel of playing or managing this club. It's part of the privilege that you have."

The United defender also insisted that it is the players who are most responsible for the poor start to the season, not Ten Hag. “The boys on the pitch have obviously got together - they've got to realise that it's happened far too many times,” he said. “They've got to realise that after every time we concede we've got to reset and refocus and make sure we go back to the game plan that got us the lead in the first place.

"It's something we do need to improve on and it's something we'll speak about amongst the players. If we want to be successful we can't be conceding too many goals in as many minutes as we have done this season."
