After 36 nail-biting episodes, 2024's season of Married at First Sight has finally ended on E4.
This year, viewers watched in anticipation as 24 singletons made the brave decision to marry a person they'd never met before. Relying solely on the guidance of the experts, the newlyweds made the courageous step of hopefully finding ever-lasting love on the popular reality show.
However, despite experts Paul Brunson, Mel Schilling, and Charlene Douglas' seemingly sound advice, many of the couples appeared to not be right for one another -and ultimately, this has led to more chaos than romance.
According to recent reports, although twelve couples walked down the aisle, there is currently only one bride and groom that have reportedly remained together. Meanwhile, the other newlyweds failed to last the entire experiment, or their relationship ended shortly after the camera stopped rolling.
As an avid MAFS UK viewer, I could name a number of things that went wrong in this series, and my sentiments seem to be echoed among fans.
Unlike the very first series of Married at First UK, which aired on in 2015, the new revamped version on E4 has evidently catered to drama and chaos over meaningful relationships. The experts appear to have no real input in who is partnered together, instead it has become increasingly evident that producers have played their hand in the matches a lot more- which has resulted in toxicity and fireworks on screen.
Partnering couples who are clearly not a right fit for each other while the experts try to convince them and the viewers that they have been matched perfectly has been exhausting to watch. With viewers' complaints regarding the matches soaring online, it felt like fans were forced to endure their hardship as well.
The breakdown of relationships became hard to witness as the episodes went on, and it sometimes made me feel uncomfortable and uninformed as a viewer. So far in this series, fans have witnessed bride Richelle verbally attack her husband, Orson Nurse, during a commitment ceremony while the experts failed to intervene and calm the situation down.
Fans were also displeased with Eve Reid's treatment towards her wife, Charlie Curtis, as we saw a crushed Charlie try to salvage her relationship. In addition to this, during the last and unnecessary dinner party, which saw the newlyweds return, Polly Sellman threw a glass of wine over her ex, Adam Nightingale, in anger- but was never removed for the evening.
The drama also spilled over with multiple relationships amongst the cast. An example of this is Hannah Norburn desperately fighting as she tries to defend herself against the other women in the experiment.
With so much disorder and mayhem, this series of Married at First Sight became unbearable and desperately needs a change. As much as I and most viewers enjoy drama, we also want to see love and marriage that can work in the experiment.
Producers need to realign their focus in order for things to improve. Since the new revamped version of MAFS UK doesn't allow couples to actually get married, many of them have nothing to lose and are most likely searching for five minutes of fame.
This is becoming more obvious as the series goes on. Viewers deserve more authenticity, especially since the show is branded as "reality TV."
Another significant change needed is the experts. As much as they try to deliver their opinions and guidance in a helpful manner, there have been several times this season where viewers have felt concerned with their lack of knowledgeable insight and constructive critique.
This has caused distress and frustration amongst fans, who are desperate to see the experts hold people accountable when things go awry. Despite experts like Paul, who continuously tells fans online that more was done when the cameras are not rolling, this hasn't transpired to fans at home who are watching and want more.
Married at First Sight UK still has so much potential. But things need to be improved quickly, or they'll lose their core fan base.
