'I chose a name and bought clothes for my baby - then doctors dropped a bombshell'

Having a baby is life-changing, and for many , planning to welcome their little one is exciting.

Whether you choose to find out the gender of your before they're born is entirely up to you. For those who do choose to find out, knowing ahead of time can help them decide on a as well as begin buying clothes and toys for their impending arrival and begin decorating their room.

But one mum-to-be who was doing just that has been left utterly confused after a trip to the doctor changed everything. Hayley Duffy said she was told to expect a baby boy, so she picked out a name and bought clothes for her son.

However, at a later scan, she received some news that turned her upside down.

In a video on , she explained: "I got told that I was having a boy. I'm 20 weeks pregnant, I'd done a blood test at 10 weeks and I knew I was having a boy. I also went to my 12-week scan, and they were like, 'Yeah, we think we can see signs of a boy,' so I was like, 'Okay, I'm having a boy'. I picked out a name, told everyone, and started buying little baby bits.

"Tell me why I go to my 20-week scan and I'm like 'Oh, we don't need to know the gender, we already know'. She was like, 'Oh, what are you having?' and I say a boy. She looked at me and she was like, 'Who said that?'. She was like, 'I can only see signs of a girl'. She even got somebody else to come in and check, and she was like, 'This looks like a girl'.

"So am I having a girl? Am I having a boy? Who knows."

Hayley captioned her video indicating she has "never been so confused", and asked if anyone else had ever had a similar problem before when expecting a baby.

Some commenters on the video claimed that the scan at 12 weeks wouldn't have been "accurate", and according to , there is an 85% accuracy on gender scans at 12 weeks. The accuracy increases the further into your you are, with scans completed after 16 weeks being 99.9% accurate.

Others shared similar stories of pregnancy experiences in which they were told to expect one gender by their doctor and ended up having another.

One person said: "I was told all through my pregnancy I was having a boy! Even at 36 weeks, they told me it would be a boy! Then I gave birth to a girl!"

Another added: "This happened to me! I did bloods, and I was having a wee boy. Named him Oscar and he had a lovely blue nursery ... 20 weeks it was a baby girl who is now Olivia and has a blue nursery."
