Jamie Carragher makes stance on Everton relegation clear with Real Madrid comparison

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that is the "Real Madrid of relegation" and this season.

There are still 31 games to be played this season, but there are major concerns that Everton could be facing another relegation battle after picking up just five points in seven games. Those results have come in its last three games after suffering four-straight losses to begin the new season.

Everton has been flirting with relegation since the 2021-22 season, although the club has recently secured new owners and is moving to a new $1 billion stadium next summer. It would be a disaster for the club if they suffered relegation in the final season at Goodison Park, but doesn't believe it'll happen.

"What I say about Everton is that they're the Real Madrid's of relegation battles. They always find a way to get out of it," Carragher exclusively told Liverpool.com. "Real Madrid always find a way to win the Champions League and Everton always find a way to get out of the relegation zone."

Carragher may be a huge Liverpool fan now, but the club legend used to support Everton. While his loyalties have shifted from Blue to Red, Carragher still feels a connection to Everton and is certain that not only would the Premier League miss them if the club was relegated to the Championship, Liverpool would lose out too.

"I loved derby games. I grew up on derby games as a kid, playing in them, watching them now analyzing them, I absolutely love them I would sorely miss them," Carragher added. "I think the Premier League would miss them as well. It's been an ever-present, huge football club.

"In the northwest of England, we've got other ones in this part of the world, but there's fewer and fewer clubs from the north actually being in the Premier League, there's so many teams from the south now. I think it's really important that Everton for this city (Liverpool) as well stay in the Premier League."

Everton has been out of its depth for some time, although with the stadium move and new owners, there's optimism that things could turn around. The last time Everton won a trophy was in 1995, but Carragher is convinced the club is a sleeping giant that could be restored.

"I know there's a frustration with Everton about the fact that they don't compete anymore," Carragher said. "And listen, that's been happening for a long time, but I think sometimes when you step back and you think as a city, we've got two huge football clubs, and if Everton are back on their feet and back where they belong.

"Sometimes where a fan thinks their team belongs, other fans don't think that, so if you speak to any Everton fan they may say, 'We wanna be back competing for trophies.' I think that's a long way off. But I think Everton for me should always be a top-eight Premier League club.

"Sometimes when you step back from that, you've got two football clubs from our city and in the top eight clubs in the Premier League, which is the biggest league in the world, it's not bad that. You know, we're not the biggest of cities or the most affluent of cities.

"So if Everton can get back on their feet for me, easily a top 10 club should be a top eight club. And if they can get to there and then start competing in terms of trying to qualify for Europe, that's what Everton should be looking to do. What West Ham have done over the last few years.

"Europa League, Conference League, getting into competitions like that and bringing in good players, exciting the fans, whatever. And the stadium they've got looks absolutely amazing from the outside when I drive past in the city. And it's something for the Evertonians to be proud of, but also people in the city, it's an amazing landmark, or it's going to be.

"It looks fantastic on the waterfront and it's something that, I think most people in the city, Reds included, not all of them, will be proud of as well. We're proud of our waterfront, it looks the part, really classy."
