Jamie Carragher rubs salt into Gary Neville's wounds as Man Utd prediction resurfaces

Send Push

Jamie Carragher has cheekily reminded Gary Neville of his shocking pre-season predictions after Manchester United’s latest thumping.

The Red Devils slumped to another embarrassing defeat at the hands of Tottenham on Sunday. Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke secured an emphatic three points for Spurs, with United captain Bruno Fernandes sent off in the first half.

It leaves United 12th in the table after their joint-worst ever Premier League start. Current boss Erik ten Hag is also on thin ice.

And Carragher did not miss the chance to remind everyone of Neville’s somewhat optimistic pre-season predictions for his former side. He retweeted a graphic from mid-August suggesting that Neville had predicted his side to finish third, while also claiming that Ten Hag was a manager to watch.

Speaking at the time, the former Red Devils defender said: "I cannot separate them because I think there is a story with all three. It is high stakes for all of them in different ways. A lot of people thought Ten Hag was gone but he is still there, renewed hope, squad stronger, feeling better but now he needs to deliver.

"Slot taking over from Jurgen Klopp and how that is going to go, stepping into those shoes has not gone well before so there are eyes on him. Maresca is very young in his coaching career having to cope with the noise at Chelsea, the amount of players, the balance of the team, it is a big job."

On his prediction that United would finish in the top four, he added: “Injuries are the massive thing for Manchester United. The left back is a problem because if Shaw is out the drop off is massive. I do think they’ll get into the top four if they stay clear of injuries.”

Neville certainly appears to have changed his mind since then having torn apart the Red Devils’ performance against Spurs. He slammed the display as “disgusting” and has also demanded the players get together for a meeting without under-fire boss Ten Hag.

He said: "I'd be suggesting the players probably go and have a meeting themselves tomorrow morning without the manager. They've got to decide first what they want to do and Erik ten Hag has got a lot of friends in that dressing room that have worked with him previously at other clubs. They need to get a grip of that dressing room very quickly because it didn't look that great out there in that first half today."

United are next back in action midweek as they take on Porto in their second Europa League group game. They then face another testing clash with a trip to Aston Villa at the weekend.
