Liverpool duo and faced off in South America this week with Uruguay coming out on top thanks to a late winning goal in a 3-2 thriller from midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
Neither Nunez nor Diaz was on the scoresheet in Montevideo but with Colombia unhappy to have lost the match in such circumstances. Andres Gomes had equalized in the 96th minute before Ugarte netted five minutes later, deep into second half stoppage time.
When the final whistle eventually blew — the game delayed because of a lengthy VAR check on the goal that made it 2-2 — the two sets of players made their feelings known. And Diaz was clearly not happy.
He and Liverpool teammate Nunez "exchanged words", according to , with Diaz and his teammates left frustrated at losing so late in the day. Those frustrations boiled over into a heated debate between the two sets of players, though the Reds duo will have cooled down by the time they return to Merseyside.
Uruguay plays Brazil later this week, though Nunez won't come up against because the Liverpool goalkeeper is still injured. Colombia, meanwhile, will host Ecuador looking to bounce back and get back to winning ways.
Liverpool.com says: South American internationals always look far more interesting then the European equivalent, which much more drama and intrigue. The games are much more competitive, seemingly, and there always seems to be some good match-ups.
Liverpool will need Diaz and Nunez to be in good form over the next few weeks. Both were quiet for their countries in this game but the Reds have some huge fixtures coming up where they will need to raise their performance levels.
