Late on Tuesday night, Salah posted a picture of himself climbing into a plunge pool alongside Gakpo and Diaz, all with wide grins on their faces. The message to fans was clear: recover well and we’ll go again this weekend.

Slot sounded a similar message to supporters in his post-match press conference, saying: “Saturday [against ] was impressive atmosphere, tonight was even more impressive.”

The outstanding performances of Salah are particularly interesting for Liverpool fans because they know this could be his final season at the club. The Egyptian’s contract is set to expire in June and, like Virgil van Dijk and , he has not yet been offered fresh terms.

Salah is paid £350,000 per week – by far the most of any player in the squad – and that makes Liverpool’s decision more difficult, as does his age of 32. Nevertheless, Slot has been very clear on his opinion of the star forward, who has 220 goals and 98 assists in 365 appearances.

“The only thing that I think about is that he’s so important for us, scores important goals, works hard for the team and I’m hoping that he can enjoy that feeling [scoring at Anfield] many, many many more times,” he said before the Leverkusen game.

"Especially if I’m here. But even if I’m not here I’m still hoping for him that he can do this many more times. He’s been incredible for Liverpool for the past six, seven eight years – I don’t know exactly how long he’s been here – and he’s been incredible for us this season. I hope he can continue doing this for the rest of the season and maybe longer to come. But that’s something up to him and the club to find the idea about the future.”
