Mrs Brown's Boys icon Brendan O'Carroll bags new BBC show featuring huge star

Mrs Brown Boys star Brendan O’Carroll has shared his delight over the fact he may have a new sitcom on his hands.

has divided critics since his comedy show - in which he dresses up as the matriarch of the Brown family - started in 2011. The long-running comedy has been known to pull in audiences in excess of 10 million viewers when it has aired on the BBC and is regularly anticipated by fans among the festive season when and New Years specials tend to air.

Now Brendan is expected to flex his comedy writing skills by penning a brand new show for the BBC. The news comes just weeks after he won the Best Comedy gong at this year’s in London.

A new show titled Shedites has been written by the star and is set to features comedian Tommy Cannon in a leading roll. The first episode has been written and has reportedly been a hit with BBC executives.

Brendan told "It’s using comedy to touch on men’s mental health. The BBC loved the pilot. Hopefully it will be out in the fall." He did not offer any information on when the show is expected to air. The has contacted the BBC for comment. Brendan's revelation comes just days after the star opened up to The Mirror about his difficult relationship with TV viewers. While Mrs Browns Boys does have a loyal fanbase, many others have hit out at the series to call it dated and offensive.

Opening up about the mixed reception, the Irish star said: "I'm the same with music and with comedy, it's subjective, you know? It really is. There's comedians that people find really funny who I then go, 'I don't really get that,' you know? They went through a stage where comedy started to get really snarky and people punching down, and I'd be looking and I went, 'I don't know...'

"And then there's other guys, people who were around me go, 'Oh no, he's f***ing hilarious. Are you kidding me, he's f***ing hilarious!' And I go, 'Well... Because it really is, it's what you call Marmite, that's what it is and people either love it or they f***ing hate it."

He added: "And you're gonna have to accept that that's the way it is. All I have to try and make sure is that the people who love it, I don't let them down, that I continue to be... I don't try and change to f***ing convert the others. I am what I am. The show is what it is, and we deliver it, and hopefully the audience agree, or that portion of the audience agree."

Fans of Mrs Browns Boys will be thrilled to know that Christmas and New Year’s Specials of the show have been recorded for the 2024 festive season.
