Netflix's Monsters fans told 'forget Menendez Brothers doc' as gripping new series released

Some viewers are still making their way through the latest series and documentary about the Menendez brothers - but they've been told to 'forget' both of them and start a new series instead.

Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story has been in the UK top 10 list of shows for the streaming platform since its initial release last month.

The series recreates the killing of Jose and Kitty Menendez by their sons and their subsequent murder trials after which the siblings were jailed for life without any possibility of parole.

It was followed up by a new feature-length documentary, which included interviews with the brothers from prison, where they opened up about the alleged abuse they suffered at the hands of their father.

The documentary examines how these claims were a part of their first trial but were not permitted as evidence in the second, in which they were convicted.

Now a new series has been released which features more of these interviews between the director Alejandro Hartmann and the brothers.

Netflix has released a three-part companion podcast to go along with The Menendez Brothers documentary.

It is part of the streaming platform's You Can't Make This Up series, which also features episodes focused on some of their other factual series and films, including Jailbreak and Unsolved Mysteries.

The episodes feature lengthier audio interviews where the brothers discuss why they felt they couldn't just leave the family home when they believed they were in danger, reflect more on their lives behind bars and what hopes they have for the future.

All episodes were released today (October 9) and range between 35 and 44 minutes long.

They are available to stream on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other podcast services.

Netflix fans who have already started listening to the series have taken to social media urging others to stream it as well.

One posted on X, formerly : "You need to hear this podcast! Forget about Monsters or the documentary. It's just Erik and Lyle telling their own story. Just listen, PLEASE!" (sic)

Another agreed as they posted: "Please listen to the podcast. Both brothers get to speak their truth."

Speaking to Netflix's Tudum website, director Hartmann shared what the process of conducting interviews was like and what he found difficult about it.

It was hard, not only because of the brothers being behind bars but also because Hartmann is based in Argentina.

He said: "I was here in Argentina, and they can’t do international calls, so we had to invent some kind of system, like a virtual number through Skype, and it was difficult. But eventually, we managed to do that."

The Menendez Brothers and Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story are both available to stream on Netflix now.
