Nobody Wants This is inspired by real-life couple with real 'ick' moment

Netflix's Nobody Wants This is capturing hearts everywhere, with viewers adoring the dynamic between Joanne (portrayed by Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody). The show charts the pair's journey through the uncharted waters of their blossoming romance.

The series' creator, Erin Foster, drew from her personal love story with hubby Simon Tikhman, a music bigwig, calling the show a "love letter" to their union.

On her podcast, Foster shared insights into her creative process, revealing that she modelled Noah on her spouse to embody someone who's "emotionally available, chivalrous, old-fashioned ... but also really funny and confident", and importantly, someone with "rizz", slang for irresistible charm.

Noah's roots in the show mirror those of Tikhman, being the offspring of Jewish Russian immigrants.

Foster opened up about their differing backgrounds: "We didn't come from similar backgrounds," she admitted. "He came from a much more traditional place. I came from a more unconventional place. When we got together we were like, 'How's this gonna work?"

The duo's romance sparked at an LA fitness centre in 2018, leading to an engagement within a year and marriage vows exchanged at a glitzy New Year's Eve bash in 2019.

The couple celebrated the arrival of their first child, a baby girl, in May.

In Nobody Wants This, Joanne grapples with the decision to convert to Judaism to gain the acceptance of Noah's family.

Mirroring her character's journey, Erin embraced Judaism before marrying and was encouraged by her manager to pen a series based on her experiences.

During a side-splitting moment, Joanne is hit with the "ick" when Noah turns up with sunflowers for her mum, and she's revealed that this is based on real-life events.

She was taken aback when her future husband showed up to meet her mother with an enormous bunch of sunflowers, which made her uneasy.

She interpreted such a grand gesture as a sign of "weakness".

The series was given the green light for a second season in October 2024, with Foster expressing her gratitude: "I'm so lucky to be able to continue this story and to do it alongside Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan, who I've been such a fan of since Girls. ... Justice for healthy relationships being the most romantic!".

Adam Brody, who plays Noah, hinted that the upcoming season might explore whether Noah's career compromise was justified.

Speaking to Tudum, he pondered: "What should he do? What should she do? What version of sacrifice is worth it?".

He continued, "What constitutes growth, or what constitutes dimming yourself to be with someone else? It's a sacrifice, but ideally, you grow together and you're better for it - you don't have to [lop] off a limb."
