Patrick Mahomes seriously injures own teammate in huge blow to Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes inadvertently injured to his top receiver, Rashee Rice, in the Kansas City Chiefs' win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mahomes threw an interception to Chargers safety Kristian Fulton in the first half. In an attempt to tackle Fulton, he accidentally landed on Rice. Rice, who had been trying to knock the ball out of Fulton's hands, was hit on his right leg by Mahomes' tackle attempt and had to be carted off the field.

The severity of Rice's injury is still unknown, but he appeared to be in significant pain as he was taken to the locker room for further examination. Head coach Andy Reid later confirmed the injury did not look good, adding: “I feel terrible for Rashee… we will hope for the best.”

Rice has been a key player for the Chiefs this season, ranking fourth in the NFL with 288 yards and two touchdowns. Mahomes immediately realised his mistake after the tackle attempt, and medical officials were quickly on the scene to assist Rice.

With Travis Kelce having a slow start to the season, Rice has become the Chiefs' primary offensive option. However, with Rice potentially sidelined due to his injury, the Chiefs may need to rely more heavily on Kelce moving forward.

The Chiefs have been dealt a double blow this week, with both Rice and Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown ruled out for the regular season due to injuries. Despite drafting Xavier Worthy in the first round of this year's draft, the team has struggled to consistently utilise him since his impressive debut against the Ravens.

Now, head coach Reid and quarterback Mahomes will be anxiously awaiting the results of Rice's scans. Despite losing the receiver, they earned a hard-fought win over the Chargers to move to 4-0 on the season.
