Plymouth players overheard making nine-word comment to Wayne Rooney that speaks volumes

Wayne Rooney was demanded to pay a "fine" by his players, showcasing the light-hearted side of his managerial presence.

The 38-year-old was sent off by the referee in Plymouth's 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, as he was adamant that one of his players was fouled in the build-up to Blackburn's 86th-minute equaliser. Joe Rankin-Costello scored late on to cancel out Michael Obafemi's 15th minute strike – and wasn't too pleased at this.

He was adamant Ryan Hardie had been fouled in the lead-up to the goal and made his frustrations known to fourth official Jacob Miles, who instructed the referee to send the former striker to the stands.

However, Plymouth hit back late on through a Morgan Whittaker header to take all three points in the 97th minute, softening the blow of Rooney's red card. This late win secured Plymouth's third victory in a row at home, and moved them up to 14th in the Championship table.

Despite his red card offence, Rooney emerged from inside the stadium to lap up the celebrations on the Home Park pitch – and get a bit of a ribbing from his squad.

After the game, the Plymouth players were overheard by Sport teasing their boss about his dismissal, asking: "How much of a fine are you paying, gaffer?"

Many clubs have a fine system in place for when players are late to meetings, or when they are sent off during a game – and it seems like Rooney is no different to his squad when it comes to losing money for bookable offences.

This light-hearted teasing from the players to their manager showcases what can be a friendly relationship between Rooney and his squad, speaking to the tight camaraderie within the group.

Rooney is clearly well-respected by his players, but is also likeable enough that they can give him a bit of a light ribbing from time to time.

With the international break now underway, Rooney will give his winning squad a bit of a break over the next few days, before beginning his preparation for an away trip to bottom-placed City on October 19.
