Send Push

Former Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus shared what sparked her decision to undergo a massive weight loss journey when speaking to and Rob Rinder.

During Friday's instalment of , the Scottish star detailed how she lost a huge nine stone.

She said: "In my 20s and 30s I was so focused on going back to and having a go at this broadcast career and really making myself a success that I didn't really focus at all on my weight."

Michelle told the two hosts that she then met her husband in her 40s and had two children with him.

She added: "They're four and two now. When I had my children, it was like a light switch went off because all of a sudden it wasn't about me anymore.

"I just started to have seriously dark thoughts about me passing away and not being there for the kids."

The 44-year-old explained to the presenters that when her children came into her life, they became the most precious thing to her and wanted to become the best version of herself.

Wanting to be clear on how she lost the weight, Rob questioned whether or not she'd taken Ozempic, which she denied, explaining she's type one diabetic.

She revealed that the more she was trying to lose weight, the more she found herself gaining it.

Michelle added: " I was looking at myself in the mirror and I should be thinking, 'Look this body has given you these two kids and your career is going great' but I was really miserable when I looked in the mirror."

Admitting it wasn't about the label on her clothes or the number on the scale, Michelle revealed she wanted to look in the mirror and think 'I really like you'.

Looking into all options, even surgery, Michelle revisited a calorie deficit, which she said was a great alternative for her.

After weight training, swimming and changing her relationship with food, she slowly noticed a difference.

Michelle added: "I don't use social media, I'm hopeless on social media and I thought, 'You know, for the first time in my life I'm going to put myself back out there'.

"I kind of shy away from anything to do with my weight online because I feel like the repercussions can be quite negative."

Wanting to celebrate the weight she'd lost, Michelle told Kate and Rob the response she's got from people online had been extremely positive.

She added: "It's been the most joyous experience on social media, people have been so positive and it's been lovely. I think the message is exactly what you said, it's body positivity.

"It's not because that person before wasn't beautiful, I just couldn't connect with that person in the mirror and now I'm in a place where I look at myself and I really like what I see and I'm really happy."

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
