Valencia, situated further down the east coast, has been hit the hardest of all the major cities. At least 2017 people have died as a result of the flood with the extent of the devastation underlined by picture of homes, car and buildings that have all been wrecked.

Valencia was due to host the season finale of the 2024 MotoGP but that has now been moved to Catalunya so that the full focus of resources can be put into aiding the recovery response. However the areas in and around Barcelona are now feeling the full force of the extreme weather conditions.

Trains have been cancelled, more than 80 flights have been delayed or cancelled whilst some major roads are currently closed. Residents are being told not to travel unless it is "strictly necessary".

The chief of Spain's Military Emergencies Unit (UME) said on Monday that it had pre-deployed 500 troops to Valencia so they could begin working as soon as they were authorised to.

General Francisco Javier Marcos said that when he saw that the situation was continuing to get worse, he sent alerts to 1,000 soldiers, who travelled overnight "so that by dawn the next day, people of Valencia could see that the armed forces were there".
