Four-time major champion has said he will reduce his commitments in the United States, starting from next year.
McIlroy has begun his bid for a third consecutive at Jumeirah Estates this weekend. The Northern Irishman - who qualified as the Race to Dubai rankings leader - could match golf legend Seve Ballesteros with six titles if he wins on Sunday.
However, after participating in 27 tournaments so far in 2024, the 35-year-old is considering reducing his schedule to around 20 events next year. And it seems as though it's his American schedule that could be culled to free up more time.
"There's a few tournaments that I played this year that I don't usually play and that I might not play next year," he told (via the ). "Like, I played the Cognizant [Classic] in Palm Beach Gardens, [the Texas Open in] San Antonio and the [RBC Heritage in] Hilton Head.

"And I'll probably not play the first play-off event in Memphis. I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year and only moved down one spot in the play-off standings."
Despite having a home in Jupiter, Florida, and spending considerable time on the east coast in previous years, it seems this will have little influence on his work schedule. McIlroy reaffirmed his commitment to several of his favourite events, including several key stops closer to home.
"Yeah, I think I'm not going to miss these tournaments in the Middle East," he told "I'm not going to miss Wentworth. I'm not going to miss the Irish Open. I'm not going to miss The Scottish Open.
"But there was a few events this year in America that I played that I don't typically play, and I think that's where I'm going to have to trim a little bit. But yeah, I have to remember, I'm 35 now. I'm not 23."
DP World Tour organisers will be chuffed knowing it's likely the PGA Tour that will feel the pinch from McIlroy's decision. Yet, fans might still catch the golf ace in Dubai as he aims to topple Colin Montgomerie's record of eight DP World Tour Championship titles.
