US songstress Sabrina Carpenter has candidly shared that she was "led astray" in the early days of her career, admitting she was "constantly guided and misguided".

The 25 year old, who clinched the UK's official song of the summer title with her hit Espresso, opened up about the challenges she faced while trying to make a mark with her initial four albums under Disney's Hollywood Records.

Carpenter, known for her track Please Please Please, described herself as "an emotional wreck" during the creation of her fifth album, Emails I Can't Send, which saw moderate success on the UK albums chart following its 2022 release via Island Records.

2023 marked a turning point for Carpenter, starting with the buzz around Espresso and the subsequent launch of her sixth LP, Short N' Sweet .Reflecting on her journey in the music industry, Carpenter told Time Magazine: "For a long time, I was constantly guided and misguided."

She expressed gratitude for the experiences that led her off course, saying: "I'm so grateful for all of those times where I was led astray, because now I'm a lot more equipped going into situations where I have to trust my own instincts." Discussing the process behind her fifth album, she revealed, "My last album was f****** sad, straight up."

Carpenter emphasised the importance of living youthfully: "I wanted to make sure to still be young while I'm young." She also touched on the pressures of maintaining a perfect image, stating that you have to be a "little robot angel" going through life. She added that you are likely to have "a lot of regrets later".

This pressure contributed to her emotional state at the time, as she confessed she was an emotional wreck. The Pennsylvania-born songstress candidly shared that the release of her album was a turning point, prompting her to embrace imperfection and "make some mistakes".

Riding high on her 2024 triumphs, Carpenter confessed to being overwhelmed by achieving childhood dreams, including a coveted spot performing on Saturday Night Live (SNL). Speaking to Time, she expressed her awe: "There were so many things I dreamt of doing as a little girl I got to do this year that felt like such a cool, sweet, little bucket-list moment for my younger self."

She didn't shy away from admitting her visceral reaction to the SNL news, saying she threw up after finding out she'd be on the show. She also gushed over her appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), calling it a long-held aspiration. Reflecting on her journey, she noted how her actual path differed from her plans: "But then it all just seemed so, not even out of reach, just like I had a different plan in my head of when it was all supposed to happen."

Having opened for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour, Carpenter is set to sprinkle festive cheer with her Netflix Christmas special, 'A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter'. She teased the upcoming show is an hour of "literal nonsense" and won't be just her singing beside a tree. She promised it would be fun and chaotic with many guests featuring.
