Simple hack stops slugs getting into your home in winter - and it doesn't cost a penny

A woman was left horrified when she walked into her kitchen and found it covered in - but luckily there’s a simple solution.

Taking to , the woman shared the rather unsettling experience and said: "One terrible night we returned late to see a whole line of them going up the cooker, like some kind of slow-motion Hitchcock film,".

After asking Reddit how she could combat the problem, one person replied with: "We used to come downstairs to 20 to 30 every morning. Accidentally left a light on one night and came down to none. Lights been on every night since and the have disappeared.”

Seeing the potential solution, other Reddit users became curious and decided to put it to the test themselves. One Reddit user who tested out the ‘light trick’ for themselves said that they were ‘amazed’ by the results, explaining that the next morning there was ‘no slug trail’ like usual.

Another impressed Reddit user commented: "The most success I had was simply leaving the light on at night in the kitchen. I have an energy saving bulb and an economy-seven metre so it costs very little. For some reason they only come out when it's dark."

But leaving the lights on isn’t the only option for deterring slugs from squeezing into your home through all the tiniest nooks and crannies. Oxford City Council suggested that the best way to deter slugs from entering your home is to seal off entry points, eliminate sources of food, and make sure to tackle any sources of damp or condensation. They also added that: "Copper tape or strips can also deter them, as they receive an electric shock upon contact.”
