St Mary's House: Human remains uncovered after builders dig up patio at sheltered housing

Builders digging up the patio at sheltered got a huge shock to uncover human remains.

They alerted who rushed to St Mary's House in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, on Thursday. Now officers are making inquiries as to why the remains, which they said were "very old", were at the site.

The Abbeyfield Society, which runs the sheltered housing site, wrote in a letter to residents that the remains were "estimated to have been there many, many years". The group says on its website it offers retirement housing and care options. It's believed the seven rooms, two flats in the main buildings, two external flats and two bungalows at St Mary’s House are for people aged 55 and older.

The accommodation firm said building work has been paused while it waits for forensic teams to visit the site. The has contacted The Abbeyfield Society and for further comment.

The house was built in the 18th Century, external but the building and attached stables were later converted into flats and bungalows.
