The magical region of Europe with amazing markets and no crowds

Send Push

If you’re looking for an autumn getaway with fewer crowds and all the opportunities to do your Christmas shopping, then why not try out this region of France which shines as the seasons change?

Provence in southeastern France is a jaw-droppingly beautiful region of the country, from villages built on cliff tops to awe-inspiring mountain ranges and of course, charming village markets there’s plenty to see in this corner of the country.

If you want a holiday like no other then why not take a trip to the village of Roussillon? Famed for its ochre clifftops and buildings, this town is an autumnal marvel. It’s built on top of a clifftop that's coloured a splendid deep red from the rich ochre, and the buildings mimic these colours back, set apart from the verdant green of the pine trees. In the summer time, tourists outnumber the 1,200 residents of Roussillon, but in the quieter months it's a perfect peaceful getaway.

There are no must-see sights in Roussillon, but this is a good thing - the whole town is a must-see. Wander through its winding streets and marvel at the historical churches and buildings on every corner before stopping into one of its many cafes or restaurants to enjoy a carafe of local wine.

Roussillon has many vineyards with half of them being more than 50 years old, and its wine is world-famous.

If you’d rather wander a market and secure some unique Christmas presents then you’re spoiled for choice in Provence. One of the best markets is The Flea Market, in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

Held every Saturday, this market has everything from antiques to artwork and is perfect for a leisurely stroll - just make sure you come with a full wallet and an empty bag. There’s between 80 and 100 vendors selling their wares, and although the prices are usually fair, there’s no harm in practising your haggling - just remember to keep it civil and polite - it’ll get you much farther.
