Bayern Munich's veteran striker Thomas Muller insists their shock Champions League defeat at Aston Villa will not stop the Bundesliga club from becoming European champions on home soil this season.

Bayern were beaten 1-0 at Villa Park on Wednesday night after smashing nine goals past Dinamo Zagreb in their opening match.

The final will be staged at Bayern’s Allianz Arena next May - 13 years after Muller was in the team beaten on penalties in Munich when lifted the trophy for the first time.

Muller, 35, who was left on the substitutes’ bench by coach Vincent Kompany as Jhon Duran’s brilliant strike secured victory for Villa insisted: “It was a small set-back on the way to the final at home.

“As expected, Aston Villa were tough opponents and the 1-0 defeat hurt - but it is not a broken leg for us.

“Thanks to the brilliant 9-2 win in the first match, we have a very good goal difference and still have six more games in the group phase to correct our position in the table.

“Vincent, we are sure that with your style of playing, your speech, your interaction with the players, you are not only causing us a little grief today, but have also given us a lot of joy in the last few games," he said.

"It will bring us joy again. We are happy that you are with us. The way we are playing football again makes us very happy. We can feel that the team is having fun!”
