TikTok star Rachel Yaffe has died aged 27 after a seven-year battle with liver cancer.
The Maryland-based star died on October 11, days after her final heartbreaking social media post talked about feeling weak after undergoing radiation. She remained positive in the post but explained that she was struggling with her appetite. Rachel has been open about her cancer battle, with the star sharing details on TikTok.
In September, she said: "I lost so much of my strength when I was getting radiation and I'm starting from day one. It's been so hard for me to get up and force myself to move so I'm working on doing that. Thankfully, it's easier to walk around here being in the city.
"Plus, I'm working very hard to stick to a very strict food regimen for cancer healing that's also taking up a lot of energy. That also is taking up a lot of energy. I'm also really low appetite so it's been a little bit difficult both physically and mentally so I'm working on focusing on the small things that bring me joy. I'm really, really, really prioritizing my mental health as well."
Opening up about how she was diagnosed, Rachel said she felt like something was wrong in her late teens but thought it was simply a gluten intolerance. However, after visiting a doctor, she was quickly referred to a specialist - where they discovered a 20cm tumour in her liver.
It was confirmed she had fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, a rare form of cancer. As stated in the Fiorolamellar Cancer Foundation, the rare disease "primarily occurs in adolescents and young adults who have no history of liver disease." When she was diagnosed with stage four fibrolamellar, she was rushed into surgery for the tumour to be removed.
Unfortunately, it returned a few months later in the liver and the lungs. She told her viewers that she tried everything from traditional to alternative medicines to fight the disease. Rachel, who lived in Los Angeles for some time, moved to New York in September 2023, where her sister lives.
In February, she hit a major setback as her lung haemorrhaged. She said in a post that it was due to a tumour putting pressure on her heart and blocking the airflow to her lung. After emergency operations and being incubated for three days, she started radiation and immunotherapy to shrink the tumour. She said in June that she got her scans back and added there were some 'really positive parts and some not so ideal parts' from mit.
A lot of the tumours looked 'stable' but one in her abdomen concerned her doctors so she went for proton therapy. Following the therapy, she went to her parents' house in Baltimore to recover and went back to New York in August.
Rachel's obituary was posted online on October 11. It reads: "She is survived by her devoted parents, Linda (nee Bass) and Wayne Yaffe; cherished brother and sister, Jordan Yaffe and Jessica Yaffe; dear grandmother, Sydney Bass; and loving dog, Layla."
