Hatton when he joined the unsanctioned LIV circuit earlier this year. No LIV players represented Europe in Rome last year, but both Hatton and Jon Rahm are on track to be part of the team that defends the trophy against the Americans at Bethpage Black in 2025.

Hatton, in particular, has shown his commitment to making the team. Not only did he fulfil his four-tournament requirement to keep his DP World Tour card – a requirement to be considered for selection – but he has also made a push to try to automatically qualify for the team by playing in numerous events to close out the season.

Hatton finished in fourth place in the Race To Dubai after winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and finishing second in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. He sits third in the Ryder Cup qualification rankings at the close of the 2024 season.

And while his inclusion in the Team Cup squad is yet further evidence of his commitment to be part of Donald's team next September, it also shows the DP World Tour's softening stance on LIV members.

The tour has been increasingly accommodating to LIV players in recent times after taking a hardline stance initially after the breakaway tour was formed in 2022. Hatton's inclusion in the Team Cup is a show of an increasingly more welcoming attitude towards European players on LIV.

Donald believes the event will be hugely beneficial for all players vying to be part of the European team at Bethpage.
