A poll involving 2,000 adults who own a cat or dog revealed that their furry companions regularly lift their spirits when they're feeling low.
According to a survey, half of pet owners believe that animals are the UK's hidden support network, aiding them through bereavements, break-ups and tough days at work.
The participants in the poll reported that pets have helped boost their mood during illness, after a challenging day at work, or following a disagreement.
One in five respondents initially got their pet to motivate them to exercise more, while 16% sought a sense of responsibility and 14% aimed to combat loneliness.
While their pets have positively impacted their physical health, the survey shows their four-legged friends have also assisted many in overcoming feelings of stress (52%), loneliness (47%) and anxiety (41%).
Over half believe spending time with their animals serves as therapy, and a significant three quarters feel that being a cat or dog owner has enhanced their mental health.

The research was commissioned by pet care specialists Purina, which has initiated a campaign to highlight the support pets offer to people in need and help one million people in vulnerable situations improve their health and wellbeing by 2030.
Calum Macrae, CEO of Purina UK & Ireland, expressed his belief in the power of pets: "Pets are absolutely the UK's hidden support network, they really are the ones there by our side often when we need them most."
Half of the respondents feel animals don't receive enough recognition for the support they provide, so to show their own appreciation 59% cuddle their pets, 45% buy them new toys, and 11% even put on their favourite TV shows for them.
England football star Lucy Bronze MBE, who is a proud mum to her adorable West Highland Terrier, Narla, has joined forces with Purina, and stated: "Narla has been the best thing ever for me - being a footballer is an absolute dream come 'true', and I couldn't do it without her by my side."
"Coming home to someone who is over the moon to see you after a long day is an incredible feeling, and I feel so lucky that she's always there for me through life's highs and lows."
