But as part of a new set of cost-cutting measures, reports that new United owners INEOS have scrapped the idea of making Rooney an ambassador for good, despite his legendary status. The club’s ownership is moving away from ambassadors entirely under the new regime, with new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly baulking at the jaw-dropping figures in United’s accounts.
It comes after Ratcliffe controversially decided to terminate Sir ambassadorial contract at the end of the season, with the legendary former manager having earned over £2million-a-year in the role since 2013.
It is unclear whether Rooney, United’s record goal-scorer, will reassess his dreams of coaching the Red Devils now that the club has cut ties with him. Revealing his long-term ambitions, he had said: “It's a process I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track. I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I'm hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs."
The legendary England striker’s first management job came at Derby County, where he was head coach between January 2021 and June 2022. He kept the club in the Championship during the 2021-22 season and nearly repeated the same feat the following year despite being hit with a 21-point deduction. The 55 points Derby won that year would have been enough to secure safety in any other season.
He then took charge of D.C. United, a club he'd previously played for, in July 2022. However, the MLS outfit finished bottom of the Eastern Conference in his first year in charge before improving to ninth in the standings the year after.
His appointment at Birmingham at the start of last season came as a shock, given the club sat in the Championship playoff positions at the time Rooney's predecessor, John Eustace, was fired.
As a player, Rooney signed for United from Everton in 2004. He played a whopping 559 games for the club, scoring 253 goals, and was expected to finish his iconic playing career at United before falling out of favour under in the 2016/17 season.
That prompted a return to his boyhood club, Everton. Spells at D.C. United and Derby followed, where he hung up his boots in 2021 and transitioned into management.
