What is Operation Anfield Exercise? Liverpool stadium announcement during games explained

Send Push

Like every football club, Liverpool has a series of announcements made over the loudspeaker system during a match.

One such announcement is known as Operation Anfield Exercise, which often leaves fans who hear it while watching the Reds play on TNT Sport or Sky Sports puzzled.

Arne Slot's men took on Bologna at Anfield on Wednesday night as they looked to make it two wins from two at the start of the Champions League campaign. Liverpool had picked up an impressive win against AC Milan last time out.

It has been a strong start to the campaign for new boss Slot, whos side sits top of the Premier League and is also through to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

But despite the results, there have been a few teething issues with Slot insisting there is still plenty of room for improvement. And his side knows it cannot afford to take opponents likely, having been beaten by Nottingham Forest on home soil recently.

Fans both at Anfield and watching on TV will be familiar with the tannoy system that rings around the stadium during matches. But what exactly does this announcement mean?

Simply put, Operation Anfield Exercise is a drill for the stewards, preparing them to respond to an emergency at a moment's notice. The announcement serves as a directive for the stewards to assume their correct positions.

Concurrently, turnstiles are checked to ensure they function properly so that fans can exit the stadium quickly and safely if necessary. This announcement is made at most home games each season as part of routine drills.

Slot will be hoping for a lot more European nights at Anfield this season with a run deep into the competition among his priorities. Speaking ahead of the match, he said: "Of course I have heard a lot about European nights at Anfield and this is my first opportunity to experience one as Liverpool head coach, so it is something that I am very much looking forward to."
