Why Usain Bolt was at Stamford Bridge for huge WSL clash between Chelsea and Manchester City

With the international break in full swing over the weekend, the Women's Super League (WSL) has been centre stage for the biggest fixtures in English club football. The top-of-the table clash between Chelsea and Manchester City was arguably the biggest of the lot.

On Saturday, Olympic legend Usain Bolt was spotted at Stamford Bridge to watch the clash between first and second. He, alongside almost 20,000 spectators, saw Mayra Ramirez and Guro Reiten score second half goals as the home side moved above their opponents and into top spot.

Before kick-off, Chelsea uploaded a photo to their social media showing Bolt alongside Lauren James, Sam Kerr, Mia Fishel and Kadeisha Buchanan. The former missed the game due to a calf injury and the latter three are recovering from ACL injuries.

The eight-time Olympic champion can also be seen talking to the players and head coach Sonia Bompastor in a video uploaded to the club's TikTok account. However, there was another reason why the Jamaican attended the fixture.

Bolt was also keen to watch how compatriot and City forward Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw performed. The WSL's top scorer was kept relatively quiet and failed to add to her fantastic record so far this campaign.

The former sprinter spoke to Sky Sports about Shaw's inspiration to Jamaican football, despite it being 'hard to support her' due to his Manchester United fandom.

Bolt said: "Bunny Shaw is one of us, a Jamaican. She has done extremely well for the country and represented well for the country as well. It always [means] so much to have somebody that the youngsters can look up to.

"In the world of women's football, it is really developing and getting big. Jamaica is a small island. So to have a superstar like Bunny Shaw, somebody you can aspire to be like, is just a big deal."

In other topics, he also spoke about Ruben Amorim's appointment as the new Manchester United head coach, revealing his excitement at seeing the former Portugal international take the reins at Old Trafford.
