People have been left speechless after realising they’ve been cleaning their wooden kitchen spoons all wrong. TikTok user Lulaboo Jenkins has taken to social media to share her 'proper' washing method, showing the leftover gunk from her spoons when she boiled them in hot water.

She put her spoons into a bubbling pot on the stove and soon after, a 'yellow mess' came out – signs the utensils were long overdue a good wash. In her post, she wrote: "Holy cr*p I should have done this sooner! Lord help me this was gross." Then another woman gave the hack a whirl, absolutely mortified to see the once-clear water go murky and brown as she dunked her own spoons.

She expressed her disbelief: "I've never thought to do this before. There must be so much grossness in it. Okay, let's see what happens. Oh my God, I can't even see the bottom [of the pan] anymore."

One viewer admitted to throwing away her wooden spoons out after seeing the video. Another chimed in to warn against boiling treated wood, arguing that food-grade wooden spoons are made to resist absorbing substances and you'd wreck them by boiling.

And yet another detoxed their kitchen, stating, "After becoming a housekeeper, I switched over to stainless for almost everything! Utensils pots pans and bakeware."

advises that to prevent staining and cracking, wooden spoons should be cleaned with soap and warm water after each use. The statement reads: "Wooden spoons can absorb all kinds of grease and odours, so it's important to stay consistent with your cleaning routine if you want these utensils to last."

It further suggests: "Make sure you rinse off food residue immediately after each use. Use a deeper cleaning method of water and vinegar or peroxide about once a month. You can add a gentle non-abrasive sponge at any time for defiant gunk or grime."
