Yahoo Mail down as users struggle to use app amid global outage

Users say they are unable to access their emails through its app, which keeps shutting down as they try to use it. It was first detected on Down Detector earlier this evening.

One person said on X: "Is anyone else having trouble signing in to Yahoo mail? I tried the mobile app and also the webmail, and both show my inbox for a second and then shut down."

A Yahoo spokesman posted on social media shortly after the outage: "Some users may be experiencing crashes with the Yahoo app. We are currently investigating the issue and will provide updates as necessary."

The timing of the outage is a little awkward for the firm as Yahoo Mail was launched on this day, in 1997. As of January 2020, it has more than 220 million users.

Yahoo! was created by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994. Initially named Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web, it was swiftly renamed Yahoo! just three months later. Fast forward three decades and internet buffs are taken aback upon learning the name actually stands for something

Several were blissfully unaware that it is a backronym, which means "an acronym formed from an already existing word by expanding its letters into the words of a phrase. It led to amusing guesses like one Reddit user's jestful: "I thought it was You Always Have Other Options." Another chimed in with: "It's a backronym and I don't care how many Yahoo flacks say otherwise."
