She bred the mare from the stallion Dartmouth, who was a winner when he raced for Zara’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

A Little Something raced three times in point-to-points and after joining the Emma Lavelle stable, finished third in a National Hunt Flat race, then seventh in a maiden hurdle at Newton Abbot in September.

At Hereford her chance was dismissed in the betting market as she was sent off at odds of 125-1.

She was held up in last place early in the race but was then hampered by a faller at the fourth obstacle, but made some progress to take fifth, 14 ½ lengths behind the winner. The Racing Post analysis described the performance as not “devoid of promise with handicaps in mind”.

Zara has had two wins from the handful of horses which have run in her name since 2016. Her husband, the former England rugby star , enjoyed big race success as part-owner of Monbeg Dude, winner of the Welsh National in 2013.

Speaking to Sky Sports Racing before the race, Zara said A Little Something would be the last racehorse she would breed.

“She is a nice mare,” she said. “She’s sweet, isn’t she? She jumps well. She just needs to get a bit braver. I like schooling them. I enjoy that. They have got to jump well and still want to gallop fast."

Of being at the races she added: "I never get to do it enough so it’s nice to actually make it work. This is why we do it, isn’t it?”

Lavelle said: “It’s nice Zara’s here and I get to see her. A Little Something wants to do everything in a bit of a hurry so we want to get her relax and do her best work at the end instead of at the beginning.

“She jumps well at home, hopefully she will bring that here today.”
