Key rules for obtaining a marriage certificate

Legal age requirement:

The legal age for marriage in India has been fixed at 18 years for women and 21 years for men. If either party is below this age at the time of marriage, a marriage certificate will not be issued, making the marriage invalid.

The time limit for application:

Newly married couples must apply for marriage registration within 30 days of marriage. If the application is not submitted within this period, a late fee of up to five years may apply.

Delay in application after marriage:

Couples who fail to apply for a marriage certificate within five years of marriage will be ineligible to obtain a marriage certificate thereafter.
