Biden calls for restraint, Trump wants Israel to hit Iran's nuclear facilities

Send Push

Following the Iranian missile attack on Israel on Tuesday night, there are concerns around the world about when and where an Israeli response would be. Many world leaders have expressed apprehensions that Israel could strike the nuclear facilities of Iran and have urged Jerusalem to exercise restraint.

What Donald Trump said

However, former US President Donald Trump is not among them, and he said he believes Israel should strike Iran's nuclear facilities.

"They asked him, 'What do you think about Iran, would you hit Iran?' And he goes, 'As long as they don't hit the nuclear stuff.' That's the thing you want to hit, right?" Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, said on Friday.

"Isn't that what you're supposed to hit? I mean, it's the biggest risk we have, nuclear weapons. If they're going to do it, they're going to do it. But we'll find out whatever their plans are," Trump said further.

'US won't support strike on Iran’s nuclear programme'

On Wednesday, US President Biden said that he would not support an Israeli strike on sites related to Iran’s nuclear programme in response to the missile attack on Israel. "The answer is no," Biden had said.

Many world leaders have also expressed similar opinions, arguing that it would be a major provocation by Israel, which could further deteriorate the prospects for peace in the region.

Does Iran have nuclear weapons

Iran has a large nuclear technology centre on the outskirts of Isfahan, its second-largest city. It includes the Fuel Plate Fabrication Plant, which Iran insists is for peaceful scientific exploration, a claim that the world has refused to accept.

Many believe that Iran already possesses or is close to enriching enough uranium to make nuclear weapons.

No assurance from Israel to US

Meanwhile, a top US State Department official told CNN that Israel has not given assurances to the Biden administration that it will not target Iran’s nuclear facilities.

"We hope and expect to see some wisdom as well as strength, but as you guys know, no guarantees," the official said.
