Being an international cricketer playing at the top level has its own challenges - struggles often overlooked once the once-unknown cricketers become global superstars. It takes a lot of mental fortitude to overcome these adversities, and even more courage when it comes to sharing the experiences from the past, something which ace batter and the current Test and ODI skipper of the Indian team, Rohit Sharma, recently opened up on.  

In a recent discussion, Rohit disclosed the various challenges which he had to go through during his younger days when he had just started off playing cricket, and revealed that those experiences were the reason why Rohit is the tough person he is at present. 

"The sport has got so many demands, be it travelling, learning the skills, fitness, training. In Mumbai, if you want to be a cricketer, you want to travel - 2 hours of travelling by train, 5 to 6 hours of playing, then travelling back - you do not know whether you will get a seat. It did take a toll on me physically and mentally. But I enjoyed that, and the hard yards made me tough - that is what made me today and help to make tough decisions these days," stated Rohit, while speaking on Jitendra Chouksey's YouTube channel.

Rohit elaborates on what "peak fitness" meant to him

There have been quite a few instances in the past and even now, where there have been cases of cricket experts and Indian fans doubting Rohit's commitment to the game just because he doesn't "look" as chiselled as some of the others in the team.

Rohit elaborated on what being fit meant to him.

Can you give your best for the team in five days in a Test Match with full intensity and in ODIs, can you give your best for 100 overs, and the same in T20Is," added Rohit.

Rohit retired from the shortest format after clinching the T20 World Cup 2024 title in June, and is currently leading India their second Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh.
