Assam prisoners shock authorities with jail escape using basic supplies

In a startling incident early Friday morning, five undertrial prisoners managed to escape from the Morigaon District Jail in Assam. The jailbreak occurred between 1 am and 2 am, as confirmed by Morigaon’s district commissioner, Devashish Sharma.

The escape plan
According to officials, all five inmates were facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and had been arrested from the Morigaon and Sonitpur districts. They executed a well-coordinated escape plan, breaking through the iron grille of their cell. Utilising bed sheets, blankets, and lungis, they fashioned a makeshift rope, allowing them to scale the jail's 20-foot-high boundary wall.

Ongoing search efforts

Following the escape, law enforcement agencies launched an extensive search operation to locate the fugitives. Commissioner Sharma stated that the authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend the escaped prisoners and ensure public safety.

Inquiry into jail security lapses
In light of the incident, a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate potential lapses in jail security protocols. This inquiry aims to uncover how the prisoners were able to orchestrate their escape and to hold accountable any security personnel found negligent in their duties.

Background of the escaped prisoners
Among the escaped inmates, three were arrested in connection with cases registered at the Laharighat police station, while one each was detained from the Moirabari and Tezpur police station areas. The seriousness of their charges raises concerns about the potential implications of their escape on community safety.
