Divya Bharti’s tragic death remains one of the unresolved mysteries in Bollywood. The ‘Deewana’ actress died in a bizarre accident at the age of 19. According to reports, she fell from the balcony of her fifth-floor apartment in Mumbai. More than three decades after her untimely demise, her death remains an enduring puzzle. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, veteran actress Guddi Maruti reminisced about the ‘Vishwatma’ star and their equation. The comedian recalled that Bharti was a “nice girl, but a bit messed up.”
Bharti Was Overworked
Divya passed away at the peak of her career. Reflecting on their time together, Maruti said that she was overworked. She also claimed that Bharti was not a workaholic by nature and was dreaming of getting married and settling down. However, she was appearing in several movies at the same time and was experiencing burnout.
'Nice But Messed Up'
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Guddi shared, “She was a nice girl, but she was a little messed up. I don’t know her childhood, but she stayed a little disturbed. She used to live life like today is the last day; bindas, she was a nice girl. At that time she was seeing Sajid Nadiadwala. This was the time we were shooting for Shola Aur Shabnam. She died on the night of April 5, and April 4 is my birthday. So, we all partying together—Govinda, Divya, Sajid, and others. She was okay at the party, but I felt she was a little sad. She had to go for an outdoor shoot, but she didn’t want to.”
She Was Not Afraid Of Heights
Maruti, who received news of Bharti’s death while on a flight, said that the news came as a big shock to her as the actress was unafraid of heights. She recalled a moment when Divya boldly perched herself on the ledge of her fifth-floor apartment.
One evening, during a visit to an ice cream shop near Divya’s apartment in Juhu, Guddi heard Divya calling her name from above. When she glanced up, she saw Divya casually seated on the fifth-floor parapet, her legs swinging over the edge, showing no fear of the height. Although Guddi anxiously urged her to be careful, Divya brushed off her concern, assuring her that she was perfectly safe. Guddi confessed she felt nervous just watching her friend’s daring stance.
Guddi also described how Divya’s passing deeply affected her mother and husband, Sajid Nadiadwala, both of whom were devastated by the loss. Divya tragically died in 1993 at just 19 years old after falling from her apartment.
The veteran actress recalled a chilling experience when she visited Divya Bharti’s family home after her untimely passing. As guests gathered to offer condolences to Divya’s mother, a stray cat suddenly wandered into the room, its mouth smeared with blood. The startling image left everyone there deeply disturbed, heightening the sorrowful atmosphere. Guddi described it as an intensely somber moment, noting the eerie timing of the incident amidst the grieving.
No Foul Play
Her husband, producer Sajid Nadiawala, has often been suspected of having orchestrated her death. However, Maruti dismissed those rumours, recalling the seasoned producer was absolutely devastated by her demise. She also revealed designer Neeta Lulla was an eyewitness to the accident.
“Sajid was like... gone. He was in bad shape. He wasn’t even home when the incident happened. Divya bent down from her window to see if Sajid’s car had come, and that’s when she fell down,” she said. She added that designer Neeta Lulla was there when the incident happened, putting paid to speculation around the actor’s death. “Neeta Lulla was there. They were talking when Divya turned looking for the car, and Neeta saw her falling down,” she said.
