Donald Trump names Brendan Carr as Federal Communications Commission chairman

Former President Donald Trump has chosen Brendan Carr to be the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The announcement came Sunday. The FCC oversees broadcasting, telecommunications, and broadband.

Carr is a familiar face at the FCC, having served as a commissioner and previously as general counsel. He received unanimous Senate confirmation three times, nominated by both Trump and President Joe Biden.

Trump has been vocal about his desire for the FCC to have tighter control from the White House, particularly in regulating how TV networks portray him. Carr's recent work aligns with Trump's views on social media and technology. He contributed a section on the FCC to "Project 2025," a plan from the conservative Heritage Foundation outlining significant changes to the federal government under a second Trump administration.

While Trump claims no knowledge of "Project 2025," many of its ideas echo his past statements.

In a statement celebrating Trump's win, Carr emphasized the FCC's crucial role: “Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that has stifled Americans’ Freedoms, and held back our Economy." He believes the FCC will be instrumental in "reining in Big Tech, ensuring broadcasters serve the public interest, and boosting economic growth."

Trump praised Carr, stating, “He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America’s Job Creators and Innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America."

The five-member FCC currently has a 3-2 Democratic majority. However, Trump gains the ability to appoint a new member next year.
