Jhansi: A fire in the children's ward of a medical college in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, claimed at least 10 children's lives.
The fire started around 10:45 PM on Friday in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, media reports said. Officials believe an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.
District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar told media, "Prima facie there is information of the death of 10 children.”
Some children were rescued from the NICU, but the fire claimed the lives of those in the interior section where critical patients receive care, reports said. Divisional Commissioner Jhansi Vimal Dubey said that most of the approximately 30 children in this section were rescued.
A couple from Mahoba district lost their newborn child in the fire, news agency PTI reported.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed district officials to provide proper treatment to the injured and ensure the fire department expedites relief work. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and the principal secretary of health are traveling to Jhansi. An investigation into the incident is underway.
